Frequently Asked Questions
Are you an attorney?
No. I am a freelance paralegal, document preparer, and Part 146 court approved mediator. I do not provide legal advice or provide legal representation.
Can you help me decide what to do legally?
No. I can only provide general legal information (such as New York State law, in regards to Domestic Relations Law), as well as past experience.
What if we need legal advice during the process?
You are strongly encouraged to consult an attorney at any time. My role is limited to document preparation and mediation services.
Are your services compliant with New York State law?
Yes. I operate in compliance with New York Judiciary Law §§ 478, 484, and 495, which govern non-attorney document preparation.
Can you represent me in court?
No. I do not represent clients in court, or communicate with the court on your behalf.
Will I have to go to court if I use your services?
Sometimes the Court may, at their discretion, request a hearing where both parties will be required to attend. By using a document preparer, you are legally representing yourself (known as “pro-se”), and understand that there may be a chance of a court hearing if requested by the Court (never say never). As stated above, I do not represent clients or appear in court on your behalf. Don’t fret, however—-judges are human and are there to make sure everything is fair and by law.
