About the Mediation Process

Consult & Scheduling

During your free consultation, we will have a discussion about your situation and answer any questions you may have. If we determine that mediation is the best path forward, we’ll send you details for intake and scheduling.

Initial Prep & Intake

Prior to your first session, complete the intake form and provide any pertinent documentation that will be relevant to your case (financial documents, property deeds, custody arrangements, etc).

Once we have reviewed the intake form and documentation, we’ll schedule your first mediation session.

Mediation Sessions

You and your spouse will meet virtually with Lauren to begin discussing the key issues and particulars of your separation. This is a process in which both parties can discuss the relevant details and work through any disagreements to reach compromise. The goal is to create an agreement that clearly defines mutually beneficial outcomes for everyone involved.

The total number of sessions may vary depending on the complexity of each case, but on average, most couples can reach an agreement in about 2 to 4 sessions.

At the conclusion of each session, both parties will receive a formal session summary, including agreements, outstanding issues, and preparation instructions for the next meeting.

Drafting and Signing the Separation Agreement

Once all core issues have been addressed, we will prepare a formal memorandum of understanding or separation agreement for your review. These documents will clearly outline all of the agreed upon terms reviewed over the course of mediation. Both parties will have the opportunity to review and discuss it prior to signing.

Final Filing

With the signed separation agreement completed, we will proceed to file it with the county clerk’s office, and you and your spouse will each receive a copy for your records.

If the parties agree to proceed further in pursuing an Uncontested Divorce filing, Compass Mediation can also assist with document preparation as a separate service. We will also assist with e-filing the paperwork on the NYS Court's website.
